Lesson
We are going to do a time lapse video of celery changing color experiment and a growing plant. This is an excellent opportunity for us to talk to the students about how video and animation works. The following video provides a good overview. I will also have an example of a flipbook. A normal video camera takes 24 images a second. With time lapse we take a photo less frequently which makes the video appear to speed up. For the celery video we're going to use 1 photo every 5 seconds. That will take a 4 hour video and make it 1 minute long.

Time Lapse Celery Experiment
Time Lapse Video
This is what we did to create the Time Lapse Video on the right.
Photos
We should also take some photos of the experiment:

Our April 2016 Time Lapse Video
We ended up speeding up the speed of this video using iMovie.

I liked the way they included a clock in the video:

Here are some different time lapse video examples of growing plants:
This video shows 3 different views: seeds germinating in water, seeds sprouting in dirt, and the stems and leaves growing.
NOTE: 1 photo per minute
|
By using a glass container, this video shows the roots growing.
NOTE: 6 days, 1600 photos (1 photo per 5 minute?)
|
This is the full view of the plant growing without re-positioning (we could make sure we capture more of the plant).
NOTE: 18 days, 1 shot every 10 minutes

Time Lapse Ladybugs
The first grade wanted to do a time lapse video of ladybugs transforming from the pupa stage.

NOTES
We decided to use the Lapse IT app because it allowed us to zoom in on the pupa. It has many other nice features such as controls for exposure, focus, ISO, and white balance. You can decide the resolution of your videos include full HD. A nice surprise were the video editing features. We continue to have lighting issues. Our classrooms have energy saving features which turn off when it doesn't sense anyone in the room. So the lights go on and off constantly in the video. I think we should buy a lighting box like the one below:
