3D Printed Affordable Housing
Is 3D printing going to be the answer to affordable housing? New communities are popping up from Mexico to Austin Texas. The 6th Grade class is going to create their own 3D printed community.
Planning
- Total # of 6th grade students: 28
- Will they build 1 or 2 communities?
- Will they each build their own building or will they work in teams? Maybe each student designs 500 square feet or less of a building. So based on the buildings below. 1 student would design a bugalow or standard house. 2 students would design a large home and teams of 2 or 3 students would work on public buildings based on size.
- Examples of square footage: 500 square feet = 25'x20'; 350 square feet = 20' x 17'
- 3D printing - largest printed item is 5" wide x 5" long. Therefore 1" = 5' would work. The standard house would end up being 5" x 4" and the bungalow would be 4" x 3+"
- A standard building has 10' high ceilings. All the buildings should be single story. That would make the buildings 2" tall.
- The students working on the Public buildings would have to split the building into 2 or 3 sections and make sure they design within the constraints.
