We have a subscription to Discovery Education (you can get the login information from the Library Haiku page). There is a great video called "Native Americans: People of the Forest". The full video is about 30 minutes long. The video shows typical life of these Eastern Woodland Indians as seen through an Ojibwa family. They hunted deer and other game animals in the forest; fished and trapped in the rivers and lakes; and made their homes from what the forest provided them. The men and women had their separate chores to perform, and it was not always easy to do what was expected. You can show the video in short segments and choose whether you show the history after Europeans arrive and modern times.

Pocahontas and the Powhatan Indians Skype Field Trip - Setup a Skype Field trip with the Virginia Historical Society. Much of what historians now know about the Indians we call "the Powhatans" is derived from English sources, as the Powhatans had no written language.Using primary sources as well as replica artifacts created by Mattaponi Indians, students will learn about what life was like in Virginia before the first English settlers made it their home. Students will identify the various natural resources used by Native American men, women, and children to make their tools and clothing. Students will also be engaged in a discussion about Pocahontas and the myths associated with her life.
The program lasts roughly one hour, including time for questions and answers with a museum educator. There are two programs available per month. |
